Works on Paper

While the world moves faster, my wish is to slow down, to explore suggestion rather than statement.
I paint almost as an act of automatic writing, walking the line between the figurative and the
abstract. I think of the painting as an action, playing on the edge of chaos; it does not become a thing
until it is seized upon by a viewer’s imagination.

The largest of the Gold and New Moon paintings take two to three months to paint, building upon a
lifetime of artistic exploration. Painting is one of the most challenging things I have ever done.
Only after painting full time for the past twenty-eight years have I finally come to a feeling of confidence
like the serene thrill of skiiing a steep and dangerous slope.

Over the decades, I have developed an unorthodox toolbox. The textural complexity of my work is created
asmuch by removing paint as by applying it. The paintings change as they grow, depending on the
seasons of nature and the currents of history.
